Thank you Ilka Kuhagen for sharing with GOMC members your knowledge and expertise in online qualitative methodologies and communication techniques.
One of the biggest criticisms of qualitative research online as compared to face-to-face, is the absence of non-verbal cues such as facial expressions, body language and intonation. Clients are afraid to lose a major part of the message or even misinterpret information accordingly.Respondents and moderators have created many ways to overcome this hurdle. There are other, different and new ways to express emotions in an online environment. In addition to this an experienced moderator can adapt proven techniques to dig deeper and make respondents describe their feelings. And, finally there are other ways to capture non-verbal clues by implementing multimedia with digital cameras, webcams, voice over IP and other resources.
