When a new member joins your community, welcome them. Send them a personal greeting or even a public greeting. I like to have a new members’ section and include a shout-out to newcomers in regular email communications.
Make sure your guests have something to do. There is nothing worse than a group of people sitting around looking at each other. “Tell us a bit about yourself,” or fill out your online profile. The goal is to build a relationship and ease the social tension. If your members are relaxed and comfortable, they will be more likely to talk. Does anyone have a recipe for virtual alcohol . . . kidding? The activity possibilities are endless and only limited by your imagination. Video yourself opening a product and upload a movie for other members to watch; take ‘before and after’ pictures of your renovation and show us, or check out this new commercial – you get the point.
Give praise! This can be public or private. Send top contributors a gift, even if it’s just a coffee card. Empower thought leaders by giving them special privileges like blogging rights. This says we value your opinion and trust what you are saying.
Mix it up, especially when communicating. There are no hard and fast rules here, because of the diversity of respondents from one community to another. Try things out and see what works. I like to get respondents’ attention by sending out holiday messages or Friday the 13th scary emails. You can also change around your medium and method. Some groups respond better to text emails; others like html- you can even try texting.
Think of the respondents as your guests and get to know them. This will make your job as a community manager a whole lot easier.
